Definition
Bleeding syndrome: a condition with bleeding as the main symptom caused by failure of blood to circulate in the vessels and blood discharges through the skin (purpura).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- Improper Diet: alcohol and spicy food – stomach and intestines
- Overwork: Heart, Spleen and Kidney impiarments
- Qi Deficiency
- Yin Deficiency
- After febrile diseases and protracted illnesses
- Yin fluid impairments – Deficient Fire
- Blood Stasis – Blood moves out of Essence
Patterns
- Symptoms: Dark purple macules and papules, with or without nosebleed, gum bleed, defaecation and urination of blood, fever, thirst and constipation.
- Tongue: Red tongue with yellow coating
- Pulse: Wiry and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clear heat and toxin, cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Intermittent occurrence of dark purple macules and papules, often with nosebleed, gum bleed or menorrhagia, flushed cheeks, vexation, thirst, hot feeling in the 5 centers or tidal fever and night sweats.
- Tongue: Red tongue with little coating
- Pulse: Thready and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Nourish yin, reduce fire and relieve collateral to stop bleeding
- Formula: Qian Gen San
- Acupoints:
Failure of Qi to command Blood
- Symptoms: Protracted and repetitive macules, papules and haematohidrosis, dull purple colour, listlessness, dizziness, pale complexion and a poor appetite.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify qi to command blood
- Formula: Gui Pi Tang
