Definition

A seasonal disease caused by Wind Heat toxin attack and blocking the Shaoyang channel.

Causes and Pathological Mechanisms

Cause: Wind Heat toxin attack

Main mechanism: the evil Toxin attacks through the mouth and the nose, blocks Shaoyang channel, fighting with the Qi. Blood and stagnates in the parotid region under the ears. As Shaoyang and Jueyin have a exterior-interior relationship, the evil Toxin can also attack the Liver. If there is extreme Toxin and Fire, Liver Wind can stir up and block the Heart Orifice. The evil Toxin can also attack the external genitals, as the Jueyin channel goes through that region.

Patterns

Routine Course - Heat Toxin In Exterior

  • Symptoms: Minor fever and aversion to cold, parotid swelling on one side in 1-2 days followed the other side, or both sides swelling up simultaneously. Painful refusing palpation and affecting chewing, obscure border, headache, sore throat, eating less than normal.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with thin white or light yellow coating
  • Pulse: Floating and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Dispel wind and clear away heat, remove swelling and dissipate the mass

  • Symptoms: Persistent high fever, both parotid swelling and pain, hard and refusing palpation, difficulties in chewing and opening the mouth, vexation and irritable, thirsty for drinks, headache, vomit, red and swollen throat, loss of appetite, scanty and dark yellow urine.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow coating
  • Pulse: Slippery and Rapid

  • Symptoms: Persistent high fever, both parotid swelling and pain, hard and refusing palpation, difficulties in chewing and opening the mouth, coma and drowsiness, convulsion, headache and vomiting.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow coating
  • Pulse: Surging and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Clear away heat and toxin, stop wind and open orifice
  • Formula: Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang plus Qing Ying Tang and Bai Hu Tang

Adverse Course - Toxin Scurrying into Shao Fu

  • Symptoms: Parotid swelling receding, one or both testicles swelling and pain, Shao Fu pain and refusing palpation.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with thin yellow coating
  • Pulse: Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Purge liver fire, activate blood and stop pain
  • Formula: Long Dan Xie Gan Tang
