Definition
Any pregnancy that ends before the baby is viable or the loss of a baby with a gestational age of 24 weeks or less.
Patterns
- Symptoms: Slight vaginal bleed with light or dull colour, dizziness, tinnitus. At night – urination, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, bearing-down sensation over the lower abdomen.
- Tongue: pale tongue with light coating
- Pulse: Rolling and Deep
- Treatment strategy: Strengthening the kidney and nourishing the fetus
- Formula: Shou Tai Wan plus Dang Shen and Bai Shu
- Acupoints: Neiguan P 6, Zusanli ST 36, Shenshu BL 23, Ganshu BL 18, Taixi KID 3
- Symptoms: Pink and thin bloody discharge, accompanied by tiredness, breathlessness, poor appetite, loose bowel movement, pale or yellowish complexion or palpitations.
- Tongue: Pale tongue with white and light coating
- Pulse: Rolling, Weak and Thready
- Treatment strategy: Tonifying the Qi and Blood
- Formula: Ba Zhen Tang minus Fu Ling, Chuan Xiong plus Xu Duan and Tu Shi Zhi
- Acupoints: Neiguan P 6, Zusanli ST 36, Shenshu BL 23, Ganshu BL 18, Taixi KID 3
- Symptoms: Flushed face, dry mouth or thirst with preference for cold drinks, irritability or hyperactivity and restlessness.
- Tongue: Reddened and furless tongue
- Pulse: Thready and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clearing the heat and nourishing yin - blood
- Formula: Bao Yin Jian plus Han Lian Chao and Sang Ji Sheng

Trauma or injury
- Symptoms: Lower abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding after a trauma or injury.
- Tongue: Normal tongue
- Pulse: Rolling and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonifying the Qi and Blood, calming the fetus
- Formula: Si Wu Tang plus Dang Shen, Bei Qi, Tu Shi Zhi, Xu Duan and Sang Ji Sheng
