Definition

Xiao Fu and Shao Fu pain in menstruation, pregnancy and puerpera. Pain can even radiate to lower back and the sacral regions.

Patterns

Kidney Yang Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Cold pain in Xiao Fu with sinking feeling, preference to warmth and palpation, dizziness and tinnitus, achy lower back and weak knees, aversion to cold, cold limbs, frequent urination, profuse urine at night and loose feces.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue with white and slippery coating
  • Pulse: Deep and Weak
  • Treatment strategy: Warm kidney yang and the uterus to stop pain
  • Formula: Wen Bao Yin
  • Acupoints:

Blood Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Dull pain in Xiao Fu, preference for palpation, dizziness and blurred vision, palpitation, insomnia, constipation and a pale face.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue with little coating
  • Pulse: Thready and Weak
  • Treatment strategy: Replenish blood, nourish ying and harmonise the middle to stop pain
  • Formula: Dang Gui Jian Zhong Tang (Xiao Jian Zhong Tang plus Dang Gui)

Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis

  • Symptoms: Distending pain in Xiao Fu and Shao Fu, refusing palpation, chest, hypochondria and breasts distending pain, bloated epigastrium and abdomen, poor appetite, vexation and bad temper and frequent sighing.
  • Tongue: Dull purple tongue with ecchymoses
  • Pulse: Wiry and Uneven
  • Treatment strategy: Activate qi and blood and remove stasis to stop pain
  • Formula: Mu Dan San

Cold Freezing and Blood Stasis

  • Symptoms: Cold pain in Xiao Fu and Shao Fu at a fixed location, eased by heat, profuse leukorrhoea, white in colour and thin in quality, aversion to cold, cold limbs, blue and pale face.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue with white and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Deep and Tight
  • Treatment strategy: Dispel cold, remove dampness and resolve stasis to stop pain
  • Formula: Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang plus Cang Zhu and Fu Ling
  • Acupoints:

Damp Heat Accumulation

  • Symptoms: Pain in Xiao Fu refusing palpation and with burning feeling, radiating to lower back and sacral regions, with or without masses, low fever, profuse leukorrhoea, yellow, thick and foul smell and dark yellow urine.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Wiry, Slippery and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Clear away heat, remove dampness and resolve stasis to stop pain
  • Formula: Qing Re Tiao Xue Tang plus Bai Jiang Cao, Yi Ren and Tu Fu Ling
