Definition
A condition of abnormal behaviour in children. More in boys than in girls, most of them at school age. Uncontrollable movements, lack of concentration, mood and behaviour abnormalities and difficulties in school.
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- Constitution: parents’ ill health and Kidney Qi Deficiency, mental disturbance in pregnancy – pre-heaven weakness, kidney and liver weakness
- Injuries: traumatic injuries during and after birth, Qi and Blood Stagnation, Heart and Liver lack nourishment
- Yang Exuberance with Yin Deficiency during rapid growth periods: Yin essence deficiency while Yang is prevalent

Heart Qi Deficiency and Kidney Qi Deficiency
- Symptoms: Lack of memory, lack of self-control, lack of concentration, too many movements, enuresis, many dreams, weak and achy lower back and a dull black complexion.
- Tongue: Thin tongue coating
- Pulse: Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify heart and kidney
- Formula: Kong Shen Zheng Zhong Dan
- Acupoints:
Kidney Qi Deficiency with Liver Yang Rising
- Symptoms: Lack of concentration, too many movements with hands and feet, clumsy, impulsive and wilful, unable to sit still, bad mood, irritable and excitable, hot feeling at 5 centres, night sweat and constipation.
- Tongue: Red tongue with thin coating
- Pulse: Thready and Wiry
- Treatment strategy: Nourish the kidney and the liver
- Formula: Ji Ju Di Huang Wan
- Acupoints:
Heart Qi Deficiency and Spleen Qi Deficiency
- Symptoms: Lack of concentration, absent-minded, lack of shen, tiredness, emaciation or deficiency weight gain, lots of movement but not bad-tempered, speaking without consideration, never finishing a task, no deep sleep, lack of memory, spontaneous sweating and night sweat, lack of appetite and partiality for certain food and a pale complexion.
- Tongue: Pale and young tongue with little or thin white coating
- Pulse: Weak
- Treatment strategy: Nourish the heart and strengthen the spleen, tonify qi and calm shen
- Formula: Gui Pi Tang and Gan Mai Da Zao Tang
