Definition
A condition with bleeding as the main symptom caused by failure of blood to circulate in the vessels and blood discharges through the mouth via coughing (hemoptysis).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- Exogenous Evils: Dry Heat and Wind Heat affect Lung
- Emotions: anger affects the Liver and consequently the Lung
- Overwork: Heart, Spleen and Kidney impiarments
- Qi Deficiency
- Yin Deficiency
- After febrile diseases and protracted illnesses
- Yin fluid impairments – Deficient Fire
- Blood Stasis – Blood moves out of Essence
Patterns
- Symptoms: Cough up phlegm with traces of blood, itchy throat, dry mouth and nose with fever.
- Tongue: Red tongue with little fluid, thin and yellow coating
- Pulse: Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Remove heat, moisturise lung and relieve collateral to stop bleeding
- Formula: Sang Xing Tang

Liver Fire invades the Lung
- Symptoms: Intermittent and sudden attacks of cough. Phlegm with blood traces or cough up bright red blood. Chest and hypochondriac distending pain, irritable and angry with a bitter taste in the mouth.
- Tongue: Red tongue with thin and yellow coating
- Pulse: Wiry and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clear liver fire, purge lung heat and cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Xie Bai San and Dai Ge San
- Acupoints:
Yin Deficiency causes Lung Heat
- Symptoms: Cough up little phlegm with traces of blood, or repetitively coughing up bright red blood, dry mouth and throat, flushed cheeks, tidal fever with night sweats.
- Tongue: Red tongue with little coating
- Pulse: Thready and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Nourish yin, moisturise lung and relieve collateral to stop bleeding
- Formula: Bai He Gu Jin Tang
