Definition
A condition with bleeding as the main symptom caused by failure of blood to circulate in the vessels and blood discharges through the mouth as vomit (hematemesis).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- Improper Diet: alcohol and spicy food – stomach and intestines
- Overwork: Heart, Spleen and Kidney impiarments
- Qi Deficiency
- Yin Deficiency
- After febrile diseases and protracted illnesses
- Yin fluid impairments – Deficient Fire
- Blood Stasis – Blood moves out of Essence
Patterns
- Symptoms: Vomiting red or dull purple blood often with residues of food, distending epigastrium and abdomen or even pain, foul mouth smell, constipation or black feces.
- Tongue: Rd tongue with yellow and greasy coating
- Pulse: Slippery and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Purge stomach fire, cool blood and remove stasis to stop bleeding
- Formula: Xie Xin Tang and Shi Hui San
- Acupoints:
Liver Fire invades the Stomach
- Symptoms: Vomiting red or dull purple blood, bitter mouth, hypochondriac pain, irritable and angry, insomnia with many dreams.
- Tongue: Red and crimson tongue
- Pulse: Wiry and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Purge liver and stomach fire and cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Long Dan Xie Gan Tang
- Acupoints:
Qi Deficiency causes Blood to overflow
- Symptoms: Vomit dull and light blood continually, sometimes better and sometimes worse, lack of shen, listlessness, breathlessness, palpitation and a pale complexion.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen and invigorate qi to bring blood under command
- Formula: Gui Pi Tang
