Definition
Chronic, non-suppurative and lumpy diseases in the neck. Equivalent to thyroid diseases: simple goitre (Qi Ying), thyroid adenoma (Rou Ying) and thyroid cancer (Shi Ying).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- Genuine Qi weakness and Exogenous Evils take advantage to invade and gather in the Jingluo and Zang Fu, which leads to Qi Stagnation, Blood Stasis and the formation of Phlegm
- Qi, Blood and Phlegm are the main pathological factors. Other pathological factors include Dampness accumulation, Liver and Kidney deficiency and Heart Fire blazing.
- Qi Stagnation: Improper Diet and drink (water) and emotional disorder.
- Blood Stasis: following Qi Stagnation or injuries.
- Phlegm Formation: Qi Stagnation and fluid gather to form Phlegm
- Jingluo and Zang Fu: Ren, Du, Liver and Kidney
Patterns
Qi Ying (Simple Goitre)
- Symptoms: Profuse swelling in the neck, gradual progression, unclear border, smooth surface, no pain, no skin colour change, soft. Lump moves when swallowing. Heavy feeling when it becomes bigger. Can press the trachea (breathing difficulty), the neck’s arteries and veins (Xue Ying) and nerves (recurrent nerve - speaking difficulty).

- Treatment strategy: Soothe the liver and regulate qi, relieve stagnation and soften Ying

Rou Ying (Thyroid Adenoma)
- Symptoms: Quick temper, irritable, sweating, palpitation, hand vibration, hunger, weight loss, hair loss, loose faeces, tiredness, irregular menstruation. With symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Shi Ying (Thyroid Cancer)
- Symptoms: Lump for a long time and suddenly grows rapidly. Hard and uneven. Movement reduced or even fixed. Pain. Affecting ear, occipital and shoulder area. Breathing, swallowing and speaking difficulties. Neck lymph nodes swelling.
