Definition
Liu Tan is a secondary infection of bones and joints caused by tuberculous bacillus, mostly following tuberculosis of the lung and sometime the intestines, the lymph nodes and the pleura. It is equivalent to tuberculosis of bone and joints. Although it is a disease of bone and joint, abscesses are frequently formed AWAY from the infection focus. When these abscesses break out, thin and clear pus is discharged. Kidney Qi Deficiency leads to weak bones and is the root cause. Wind, Cold and Phlegm gathering in bones is the branch cause.
Patterns
Fu Gu Ju (Osteomyelitis) and Gu Ai (Osteosarcoma)
Early stage
- Symptoms: Sudden onset with persistent severe pain, local ring-shaped swelling with bright red and hot skin. Severe general symptoms: High fever and rigor, sweat but temperatures do not come down, aches all over the body, loss of appetite, even coma and delirium

- Treatment strategy: Warm the kidney and jingluo, dispel cold and resolve phlegm
- Formula: Yang He Tang

Middle stage
- Symptoms: Sudden onset with persistent severe pain, local ring-shaped swelling with bright red and hot skin. Severe general symptoms: High fever and rigor, sweat but temperatures do not come down, aches all over the body, loss of appetite, even coma and delirium

Late stage

- Formula: For Qi and Blood Deficiency use Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang. For Yin Deficiency with Fire use Qing Gu San and Zhi Bai Di Huang Tang.
