Definition
A condition with bleeding as the main symptom caused by failure of blood to circulate in the vessels and blood discharges through the nose (epistaxis).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
- There are two major factors: Qi and Fire.
- Exogenous Evils: Dry Heat and Wind Heat – Lung
- Extreme Emotions: anger – Liver and consequently the Lung
- Overwork: Heart, Spleen and Kidney impiarments
- Qi Deficiency
- Yin Deficiency
- After febrile diseases and protracted illnesses
- Yin fluid impairments – Deficient Fire
- Blood Stasis – Blood moves out of Essence
Patterns
- Symptoms: Nosebleeding with a dry mouth, sore throat, with or without fever and a cough with little phlegm.
- Tongue: Red tongue with thin coating
- Pulse: Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clear lung heat and cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Sang Ju Yin
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Nosebleeding with or without gum bleeding, bright red and large amount of blood, thirst for drink, dry nose, dry mouth with foul smell, dysphoria and constipation.
- Tongue: Red tongue with yellow coating
- Pulse: Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Purge stomach fire and cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Yu Nu Jian
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Nosebleeding, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, irritable, red eyes and a bitter taste in the mouth.
- Tongue: Red tongue
- Pulse: Wiry and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Purge liver fire and cool blood to stop bleeding
- Formula: Long Dan Xie Gan Tang
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Nosebleeding with or without gum bleeding and hematohidrosis (sweat blood), lack of vitality, listlessness, pale complexion, dizziness, tinnitus, palpitation
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify qi to command blood
- Formula: Gui Pi Tang
