Definition
Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up. Considered normal if younger than 3 years. Also called Niao Chuang (bed-wetting).
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
Deficiency is the key word.
- Kidney Qi Deficiency – fails to control bladder
- Spleen Qi Deficiency and Lung Qi Deficiency – fail to control the water course
Patterns
- Symptoms: Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up, pale complexion, delayed mental development, weak and achy back and knees, clear and profuse urination, cold limbs and a aversion to cold.
- Tongue:
- Pulse: Deep and Slow
- Treatment strategy: Warm the kidney and solidify with astringents
- Formula: Sang Piao Xiao San
- Acupoints:
Spleen Qi Deficiency and Lung Qi Deficiency
- Symptoms: Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up, pale complexion, lack of shen, weak limbs, lack of appetite and loose feces.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Moderate
- Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen and lung qi to control water course
