Definition

Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up. Considered normal if younger than 3 years. Also called Niao Chuang (bed-wetting).

Causes and Pathological Mechanisms

Deficiency is the key word.

Patterns

Kidney Qi Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up, pale complexion, delayed mental development, weak and achy back and knees, clear and profuse urination, cold limbs and a aversion to cold.
  • Tongue:
  • Pulse: Deep and Slow
  • Treatment strategy: Warm the kidney and solidify with astringents
  • Formula: Sang Piao Xiao San

Spleen Qi Deficiency and Lung Qi Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Urination in sleep and unaware until waking up, pale complexion, lack of shen, weak limbs, lack of appetite and loose feces.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue
  • Pulse: Moderate
  • Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen and lung qi to control water course
  • Formula: Si Wu Tang
