Definition
A condition marked by frequent and liquid or watery defecations.
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
The key for Xie Xie is to do with the Spleen and Stomach.
- Cold, damp, summer-heat and heat: spleen fails to transport in a normal manner, the clear and the turbid are not separated.
- Overeating and preference to some particular food: food stagnation; damp-heat, cold-damp etc.
- Anger, worry and pensiveness: liver qi invading spleen. Either the Liver is too vigorous or the Spleen is too frail, otherwise known as the Liver bullying the Spleen.
- Protracted illnesses, constitutional weakness, protracted diarrhea
- Spleen Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency. A weak Spleen fails to separate the clear and the turbid, and weak Kidney Yang fails to warm the Spleen Yang and control the opening and the close of its orifice.
Patterns
- Symptoms: Diarrhea: clear, thin liquid or watery. Abdominal pain, noisy intestine, epigastrium distension, poor appetite, fever and aversion to cold, stuffy nose, headache, limbs and body aches.
- Tongue: White and greasy coating
- Pulse: Soggy and Moderate
- Treatment strategy: Relieve exterior and expel cold, aromatics to resolve damp and turbidity
- Formula: Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Wan
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Diarrhea: diarrhea as soon as abdominal pain occurs, with force like water cannon, loose or liquid, yellow colour, foul smell, burning sensation in anus. Occurs in summer, fever, vexation, thirty, dark and scanty urination.
- Tongue: Yellow and greasy coating
- Pulse: Soggy and Rapid or Slippery and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clear heat and percolate damp
- Formula: Ge Gen Huang Qin Huang Lian Tang
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Diarrhea: foul smell like rotten egg and with undigested food, abdominal pain eased by diarrhoea. Epigastrium and abdominal distension, noisy intestine, eructation with rotten food and acid.
- Tongue: Turbid, thick and greasy coating
- Pulse: Slippery
- Treatment strategy: Promote digestion and remove food retention
- Formula: Bao He Wan
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Diarrhea with loose and thin with undigested food, aggravated by just a liltte greasy food. Poor appetite, distension in epigastrium and abdomen, tiredness, lassitude and a pale complexion.
- Tongue: Pale with white coating
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen and invigorate transport function
- Formula: Shen Ling Bai Zhu San
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Diarrhea with before dawn, abdominal pain and noisy intestine immediately followed by diarrhoea, pain eased after diarrhoea. Cold body and limbs, achy and cold lower back and knees.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Thready
- Treatment strategy: Warm the kidney, move the spleen and astringe the intestine to stop diarrhea
- Formula: Si Shen Wan
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Diarrhea and abdominal pain occur after emotional events with moving pain and frequent flatulence. Chest and hypochondria distension, eructation with gas with a poor appetite.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Wiry
- Treatment strategy: Calm the liver and invigorate the spleen
- Formula: Tong Xie Yao Fang
