Definition
A range of diseases characterised by derangement (alienation) and mental disorders (psychoses or mental diseases).
Dian Zheng (Depressive Psychosis) is characterised by silence, dementia, paraphasia, quietness and smirk.
Kuang Zheng (Manic Psychosis) is characterised by tumult, restlessness, beating, scolding, shouting, hyperactivity and anger.
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
Focus on the Heart and Shen, but do not forget the Spleen, Liver, Gall Bladder and the Kidney.

Qi Stagnation and Phlegm
- Symptoms: Depression, cold complexion and apathy, dementia, paraphasia and soliloquy, mood swings and a poor appetite.

- Treatment strategy: Regulate qi, relieve depression, resolve phlegm and open orifices

Heart Qi Deficiency and Spleen Qi Deficiency
- Symptoms: Mental confusion, sorrowful and tearful, palpitation and panic, susceptible to fright, lassitude and tiredness, poor appetite.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Invigorate spleen, nourish heart, tonify qi and pacify shen
- Formula: Yang Xin Tang and Gan Mai Da Zao Tang

Manic Psychosis
Liver Fire and Phlegm
- Symptoms: Sudden onset of mania. At the beginning, there are such symptoms as choleric mood, headache, insomnia, angry and threatening eyes, flushed face and eye. These are followed by madness such as climbing walls, scaling roofs, beating, scolding, shouting, breaking all objects and injuring people with excessive force, no sleeping or eating.
- Tongue: Red and crimson tongue with yellow and greasy coating
- Pulse: Wiry, Large, Slippery and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Tranquillise heart, purge phlegm and cleanse liver fire
- Formula: Sheng Tie Luo Yin
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Protracted mania showing signs of abating and tiredness, talkative, susceptible to panic and fright, intermittent dysphoria, thin physique and a flushed face.
- Tongue: Red tongue with little coating
- Pulse: Thready and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Nourish yin, lower fire and pacify shen
