Definition

A common emergency and serious condition in paediatrics. Its main symptoms are convulsion and coma. Ages: 1-5 years. Sudden onset, critical, common and any season. Occur in any stages of acute and chronic diseases.

  • Ji Jing Feng – Acute
  • Man Jing Feng – Chronic

Causes and Pathological Mechanisms

Closely related to children’s physiological features and individual constitutions.

Yang Body with Young Yin

Six Exogenous Evils and Improper Diet all transform into Fire easily. Fire consumes fluid and burns it into Phlegm, resulting in Heat, Phlegm, Wind and shock.

Weak Lung

Patterns

Ji Jing Feng - Exterior Wind Heat

  • Symptoms: Fever, headache, cough, red throat, swollen tonsil, runny nose, vexation. Sudden convulsion and coma while having high fever.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with thin and yellow coating
  • Pulse: Floating and Rapid or Finger Vein over Wind Pass
  • Treatment strategy: Dispel wind and clear away heat, stop wind and relieve convulsion
  • Formula: Yin Qiao San
  • Acupoints:

Ji Jing Feng - Febrile Pestilence and Toxin (Warm Evils Close the Orifices)

  • Symptoms: Persistent high fever, vexation, thirsty, sudden convulsion of the limbs and body, eyeballs turning upwards, coma, blue face, or even cold limbs with hiding pulse.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Rapid or Finger Vein reaching Life Pass
  • Treatment strategy: Soothe the liver to stop wind, clear the heart to open orifice
  • Formula: Ling Jiao Gu Teng Tang

Ji Jing Feng - Febrile Pestilence and Toxin (Qi and Ying Extreme Heat)

  • Symptoms: Very sudden onset, high fever, convulsion, coma, stiff neck, severe headache, madness and vexation, macules and papules; or deep coma, high fever, no sweat, breathing difficulties, large amount of phlegm in throat, no urine and no defaecation.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Rapid or Finger Vein reaching Life Pass
  • Treatment strategy: Clear away heat from qi and ying, stop wind and open orifice
  • Formula: Qing Wen Bai Du Yin

Ji Jing Feng - Damp Heat Pestilence

  • Symptoms: Persistent high fever, frequent convulsion, coma, delirium, vexation, abdominal pain refusing palpation, frequent vomit, sticky faeces or with pus and blood.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with yellow and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Slippery and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Remove toxin and clear intestine, stop wind and open orifice
  • Formula: Huang Lian Jie Du Tang

Ji Jing Feng - Sudden Fright

  • Symptoms: Convulsion after sudden fright, coma, sensitive to noise and light with sudden jumps and screams and cold limbs.
  • Tongue: Thin and white tongue coating
  • Pulse: Irregular
  • Treatment strategy: Calm fright and tranquillise shen
  • Formula: Hu Po Bao Long Wan

Man Jing Feng - Earth Deficiency and Wood Exuberance

  • Symptoms: History of diarrhoea for a long time, tremor and spasm from time to time, lack of shen, lassitude and lethargy, dim complexion, sleepiness, eyes half open when asleep, cool limbs, clear and watery diarrhoea or with greenish colour and noisy abdomen.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue with white and greasy coating
  • Pulse: Deep and Weak or pale Finger Vein
  • Treatment strategy: Warm and activate spleen yang, strengthen the earth and control the wood
  • Formula: Shen Ling Bai Zhu San and Si Ni Tang

Man Jing Feng - Yin Deficiency with Wind Stirring

  • Symptoms: History of Ji Jing Feng or febrile diseases for some time, contracted or stiff limbs and body with spasm from time to time, fever, emaciation, hot feeling at five centres, vexation, tiredness, dry feces.
  • Tongue: Crimson tongue with little moist and a bright and exfoliated coating
  • Pulse: Thready, Wiry and Rapid or pink Finger Vein
  • Treatment strategy: Nourish yin and calm yang, replenish water to control wood
  • Formula: Da Ding Feng Zhu
  • Acupoints:

Man Jing Feng - Qi and Blood Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Limbs spasm and shaking, lassitude and lethargy, lack of chen, fevers, low and weak voice, dim complexion and profuse sweating.
  • Tongue: Pale and young tongue with little coating
  • Pulse: Deep and Thready or pale Finger Vein
  • Treatment strategy: Tonify qi and nourish blood
  • Formula: Ba Zhen Tang
  • Acupoints:

Man Jing Feng - Kidney Essence Exhaustion

  • Symptoms: History of delayed or non closure of fontanel, “five delays – standing, walking, speaking, hair and teething and five softnesses – neck, mouth, hands, feet and muscles”, limb and body spasm, strabismus (squint eyes) and fixed gaze, transient aphasia and deafness, shaking and spasm only in specific parts of the body and it becomes normal again.
  • Tongue: Pale and young tongue
  • Pulse: Deep and Weak or pale Finger Vein
  • Treatment strategy: Solidify the root and replenish primordial qi, nourish yin and calm yang
