Definition
Contact dermatitis can be divided into two aspects:
- Direct irritant contact dermatitis: dermatitis caused by exposure to substance which has a damaging effect on the normal barrier function of the epidermis.
- Allergic contact dermatitis: dermatitis caused by prior exposure to an allergen leading to specific cell-mediated sensitisation.
Pathological Mechanisms
Constitutional intolerance to certain substances (paint, medicine, plastics, dyes, plants etc), evil Toxin invade skin and transform into Heat. Qi and Blood fight with these Toxin in the skin and resulting in the onset of dermatitis.
Treatments
- External treatment: similar to eczema. Use mild preparations only. Avoid contacts with suspected substances.
- Internal treatment: principles are to clear away Heat, detoxify, drain Dampness and dispel Wind.
- Upper part: Xiao Feng San
- Lower part: Long Dan Xiao Gan Tang
- Sever cases: Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin or Qing Wen Bai Du Yin
