Definition

An acute epidemic disease with a special type of papules caused by seasonal evil toxin.

Causes and Pathological Mechanisms

  • Seasonal evil Toxin invades through the nose and mouth affecting the Lung and the Spleen. The seasonal evil Toxin and the internal Dampness combine and moving outwards to the skin, resulting in a special type of rash – Shui Dou (Water Peas).
  • Also has “routine” course and adverse course.
  • Routine course: evil Toxin and Dampness lifted out and gone
  • Adverse course: evil Toxin collapse inwards

Patterns

Wind Heat Syndrome

  • Symptoms: Light fever, blocked and runny nose, cough, sneeze, rashes appear 1-2 days after onset, mixture of vesiculation, pustulation and crusts. Small rash, red and moist, fluid clear and bright, sparse, more in trunk and fewer in limbs.
  • Tongue: Thin white tongue coating
  • Pulse: Floating and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Dispel wind, clear away heat, drain dampness and detoxify
  • Formula: Yin Qiao San

Fire Toxin Syndrome

  • Symptoms: Persistent high fever, vexation, thirty for drink, red face and eyes, big and dense rashes with big red rings, cloudy fluid, constipation, scanty and dark urine.
  • Tongue: Red and crimson tongue, rough, dry and yellow coating
  • Pulse: Surging and Rapid
  • Treatment strategy: Clear away heat toxins and generate fluids
  • Formula: Bai Hu Tang and Yin Qiao San
