Definition
Bi: close, block and obstruct. Zheng: syndrome. A syndrome caused by attacks to the body by Wind, Cold, Dampness and Heat evils, which close and block the Jingluo and obstruct the normal movement of Qi and Blood. Its main clinical manifestations are aches, pains, numbness, heaviness and movement difficulties in muscles, tendons, bones and joints, or even swelling and burning sensation in joints.
Causes and Pathological Mechanisms
The main causes are weakness of the Genuine Qi and the invasion of Wind, Cold, Dampness and Heat (Exogenous Evils).
The main pathological mechanism is Exogenous Evils block the Jingluo and obstruction the normal movement of Qi and Blood. These blockages will lead to Blood Stasis and Phlegm, Qi and Blood Deficiency, Liver, Kidney and Zang Fu Bi (blockage of zang-fu organs). The weakness (transient or permanent) of the Genuine Qi is the pre-condition for the invasion of Exogenous Evils. Wind Cold Dampness evil invasion: damp living condition, soaking in rains, wading in water, violently changing weathers. Wind Cold Dampness evil invades the body when the Genuine Qi is deficient.

Wind Cold Dampness Bi - Xing Bi
- Symptoms: Wandering pains and aches in body, limbs and joints, difficulties in bending and stretching. Fever and aversion to cold.
- Tongue: Thin white tongue coating
- Pulse: Floating
- Treatment strategy: Expel wind, unblock jingluo, disperse cold and remove damp
- Formula: Fang Feng Tang
- Acupoints:
Wind Cold Dampness Bi - Tong Bi
- Symptoms: Fixed pains and aches in body, limbs and joints, quite severe, eased by warmth and aggravated by cold, difficulties in bending and stretching.
- Tongue: White tongue coating
- Pulse: Wiry and Tight
- Treatment strategy: Disperse cold, warm jingluo, expel wind and remove damp
- Formula: Wu Tou Tang
- Acupoints:
Wind Cold Dampness Bi - Zhuo Bi
- Symptoms: Pains and aches in body, limbs and joints with heavy feeling, heavy limbs with movement difficulties, numb feeling in skin and muscles.
- Tongue: White and greasy tongue coating
- Pulse: Soggy and Moderate
- Treatment strategy: Dry damp, unblock jingluo, expel wind and disperse cold
- Formula: Yi Yi Ren Tang
- Acupoints:
- Symptoms: Pains and aches in body, limbs and joints, red, swelling with burning sensation, eased by cold and aggravated by heat. Fever, thirst for cold drinks, vexation, sweating and an aversion to wind.
- Tongue: Red tongue with yellow and dry coating
- Pulse: Slippery and Rapid
- Treatment strategy: Clear heat, unblock jingluo, expel wind and remove damp
- Formula: Bai Hu Jia Gui Zhi Tang
- Acupoints:
Jiu Bi (Protracted Bi) - Blood Stasis and Phlegm
- Symptoms: Pains and aches in body, limbs and joints for a long time, sometimes better and sometimes worse, swelling joints, stiff, fused or deformed joints and skin nodules (rheumatic nodules).
- Tongue: Purple tongue with ecchymoses, white and greasy coating
- Pulse: Thready and Uneven
- Treatment strategy: Resolve phlegm and remove stasis, trance out wind and unblock jingluo
- Formula: Tao Hong Yin
- Acupoints:
Jiu Bi (Protracted Bi) - Qi and Blood Deficiency/Liver Qi Deficiency and Kidney Qi Deficiency
- Symptoms: Pains and aches in body, limbs and joints for a long time, bending and stretching difficulties, lower back and spine cold and pain. Tiredness and lassitude and a pale complexion.
- Tongue: Pale tongue with white coating
- Pulse: Thready and Weak
- Treatment strategy: Tonify qi, blood, liver and kidney, expel wind, disperse cold and remove damp
- Formula: Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang
- Acupoints:
Zang Fu Bi – Heart Bi
- Symptoms: Protracted Bi Zheng, palpitation, short of breath, aggravated by exertion and a pale complexion.
- Tongue: Pale tongue
- Pulse: Empty and Rapid or Knotted and Intermittent
- Treatment strategy: Tonify qi and blood, nourish heart to recover normal pulse
