Definition

  • Xiong Bi is a syndrome of heart functional disorder caused by qi and blood blockage in the chest.
  • Its main symptoms include chest distension and pain, or in severe cases left chest gripping pain (angina) with radiating pain to the back and the upper arm, breathlessness and dyspnoea.
  • Occurs mainly in middle and old age people.

Heart Blood Stasis

  • Symptoms: Chest stabbing and fixed pain more severe at night and palpitations.
  • Tongue: Dull and purple or blue tongue
  • Pulse: Deep and Uneven
  • Treatment strategy: Activate blood movement, resolve stasis and remove blockages to stop pain
  • Formula: Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang
  • Acupoints:

Phlegm Stagnation

  • Symptoms: Choking chest pain, may or may not radiating to back and shoulder, short of breath, overweight, heavy limbs and body, large amount of phlegm.
  • Tongue: Greasy tongue coating
  • Pulse: Slippery
  • Treatment strategy: Activate yang to remove phlegm, turbidity and blockages
  • Formula: Gua Lou Xie Bai Ban Xia Tang
  • Acupoints:

Cold Blockage

  • Symptoms: Chest pain radiating to back and aggravated by cold, chest distension with short of breath, palpitation, unable to lie in supine position due to dyspnoea and breathing difficulties, extreme cold limbs and a pale complexion.
  • Tongue: White tongue coating
  • Pulse: Deep and Thready
  • Treatment strategy: Pungent and warm to activate yang, expel cold and remove blockages
  • Formula: Gua Lou Xie Bai Bai Jiu Tang
  • Acupoints:

Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Chest distension and dull pain, palpitation, night sweat, vexation, insomnia, lower back and knee aches, tinnitus and dizziness.
  • Tongue: Red tongue with or without ecchymosis and a little coating
  • Pulse: Thready and Rapid or Thready and an Uneven pulse
  • Treatment strategy: Nourish yin to strengthen kidney and nourish heart to pacify shen
  • Formula: Zuo Gui Wan
  • Acupoints:

Qi Deficiency and Yin Deficiency

  • Symptoms: On and off chest distension and dull pain, palpitation, short of breath, lassitude, indolence of speech, dull complexion, dizziness and blurred vision which is aggravated by exertion.
  • Tongue: Reddish tongue with or without teeth marks
  • Pulse: Weak and Thready pulse or Knotted and Intermittent pulse
  • Treatment strategy: Tonify qi and nourish yin, promote circulation and remove collateral blockage
  • Formula: Sheng Mai San and Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang
  • Acupoints:

Yang Qi Deficiency

  • Symptoms: Chest distension, short of breath, or even chest pain radiating to the back, palpitation, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, cold limbs, lower back ache and weakness and a pale complexion.
  • Tongue: Pale and blue purple lip and nail, pale or dull purple tongue
  • Pulse: Deep and Thready or Faint
  • Treatment strategy: Tonify qi and warm yang, promote circulation and remove collateral blockage
  • Formula: Sheng Fu Tang and You Gui Yin
