The Primacy of Spirit

by Lonny Jarrett
In the fall of 2004 I gave the keynote address at the annual meeting of the British Acupuncture Council (BAC) in London, England. My topic was on Chinese medicine and the evolution of consciousness. In response, Peter Deadman wrote a message to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Yahoo forum questioning Chinese medicine’s ability to effectively treat the spirit, or psychological states and warned us that we need to be careful when making the claim that it can. The central issues raised by his message emphasise the importance of recognising the natural hierarchical relationships between the body, mind, and spirit, between student and teacher and between practitioner and patient.
