Statutory self-regulation (SSR) had become something of a holy grail for traditional acupuncturists in the UK. It had always been seen as the last step in a process of gaining true professional recognition alongside orthodox western medicine, and had achieved almost iconic status. The last decade, however, has seen fundamental changes in the structure of statutory regulation in the UK, and the original intended outcome of SSR is no longer possible.
