Chinese researchers are introducing new forms of traditional medicine, which can help astronauts deal with osteoporosis and insomnia.

Chinese astronauts have been testing new varieties of traditional medicine packaged in pill and capsule forms that could help treat osteoporosis and insomnia and improve the immunity system.

“Zero gravity causes cardiovascular problems, lower immunity and bone mineral loss,” explained Li Yongzhi, a doctor with the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.

“The medicines are intended to improve cardiovascular and heart and blood vessel functions during short space flights or space walks,” she said.

"Western medicine lacks effective remedies with no side effects, but traditional Chinese medicine offers good over-all recuperation," she added.

Li Yongzhi also announced that Russia and other European countries have begun research on traditional Chinese medicine for space programs. The new medicine will be available in 2008.
